In its native home of North America, Eupatorium is commonly known as Joe Pye Weed. Cut them back hard in early spring to allow the new growth to shine. They will also grow by ponds in quite moist soil as long as it is getting a good dose of sun. Water to establish, then only if rainfall is low, they become quite dry tolerant - you will know if you have pushed the too far, because if they are too dry the leaves will scorch.
